I was staring at a ripe avocado and a pack of smoked salmon one lazy Sunday morning and decided to turn my favorite breakfast into the most addictive smoked salmon appetizer I have ever served. The moment I topped those little toasts with creamy avocado and silky smoked salmon and set them on the table, my whole family gathered around the platter before I even had a chance to sit down.

Description

Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast Bites are creamy, crisp, and perfect for brunch or entertaining. Toasted bread squares hold mashed avocado and smoked salmon for a simple bite with fresh flavor.

Ingredients

8 small baguette slices or rye bread squares

1 ripe avocado

4 ounces smoked salmon

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

1 tablespoon capers, optional

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2. Arrange the bread slices on a baking sheet and brush them lightly with olive oil.

3. Bake the bread for 6 to 8 minutes until lightly crisp.

4. Add the avocado, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper to a small bowl.

5. Mash the avocado until mostly smooth.

6. Spread the avocado mixture over each toasted bread piece.

7. Top each bite with smoked salmon.

8. Garnish with dill and capers if desired.

9. Serve right away.

Notes

Use ripe avocado so it spreads easily.

Toast the bread until crisp enough to hold the toppings.

Assemble the bites just before serving for the best texture.

Let’s Put It Together

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet and brush each one lightly with olive oil.
  3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until golden and crisp, then remove and let cool completely.
  4. In a bowl, mash the avocados with lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes until smooth but slightly chunky.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the cream cheese with lemon zest, half the dill, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  6. Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture onto each toasted baguette round.
  7. Spoon a generous layer of the mashed avocado on top of the cream cheese.
  8. Drape a folded slice of smoked salmon over the avocado layer.
  9. Top each bite with a pinch of fresh dill, sliced chives, one or two capers, and a thin slice of red onion.
  10. Finish with a light sprinkle of red pepper flakes and a tiny squeeze of lemon juice.
  11. Arrange on a serving board and serve immediately for the best texture.

Fun Ways to Switch It Up

  • Spread smoked salmon dip directly onto the toast instead of layered cream cheese for a deeper smoky flavor
  • Add a poached quail egg on top for an elegant brunch-style version
  • Use sourdough or whole grain bread slices for a heartier, nuttier base
  • Drizzle with sriracha honey for a spicy sweet finishing touch
  • Serve as part of a full smoked salmon platter with cucumber bites and crackers on the side
  • Swap avocado for guacamole for a bolder, more herbaceous flavor base
  • Top with everything bagel seasoning for extra crunch and flavor
  • Add thin radish slices on top for a peppery, colorful garnish
  • Sprinkle with microgreens or baby arugula for a fresh and peppery finish
  • Replace the baguette with rice cakes for a lighter, gluten-free friendly option
